OVERVIEW OF KENYA SAFARIS
Kenya Safaris

No one knows exactly when the tradition of Safari started, overseas visitors and explorers had started coming to Kenya since the 1930’s; however, it is said to have been popularized by Ernest Hemingway, whose expeditions in East Africa both inspired his writing and glorified the notion of the Great White hunter.

The word Safari is derived from the Arab word “Safar” and in Swahili (the most popular language of East Africa) it means expedition or traveller’s caravan. Much has changed since Hemingway’s time, but the very meaning of a safari can still be experience now with a visit to east Africa.

Despite of increased competition from other Safari destinations, Kenya is still one of the most popular destinations in Africa. Approximately 10% of the country has been set for conservation of wildlife and biodiversity. More over, Kenya has much more to offer than the spectacular wildlife. The beautiful lakes, the savannas, and many more are just as unforgettable as that of a lioness hunting or wildebeests migrating.

Kenya has more than 50 national parks and resources, each offer something unique. The most popular are Masai Mara National Reserve – for ‘big 5’; Amboseli National Park – for the majestic Mt. Kilimanjaro; Tsavo National Park- for the ‘man-eaters’. Of course, there are many more that are equally attractive, such as the Lake Nakuru National Park, which is famous for thousands of greater and lesser flamingos, the Kakamega National Reserve for its tranquillity and bird life. Further more, there is the cultural safari that shows off the colourful and beautiful people and cultures of Kenya. It is important to choose the ‘right’ destinations for a safari although there is always the opportunity of coming back for what was missed.

There are many ways for achieve a wonderful safari experience. The method of viewing the wildlife and sceneries vary. The minivans that are specially prepared with pop-up roofs for better safari viewing is most common, the better choice would be a safari-equipped Land Cruiser. To travel between National Parks and Reserves, there is also the option of scheduled/chartered flights if the need arise. Even horseback, camel, balloon and helicopter safaris are options.

Accommodations can be easily arranged most of the time, except during the high season, especially during the time of the great migration. It is always advisable to book in advance to avoid any inconvenience. Hotels and lodges in National Parks and reserves vary in their standards and charges, but they all offer spectacular services. The experience of sleeping in a tented camp under the African sky next to the wild animals can be a lifelong memory.
